MTB in Valle Maira

Gravel tracks, forest roads and trails among 194 hamlets, with no traffic and no crowds: a valley made for riding, with or without a motor.

Why here

A valley made for riding

Valle Maira is natural mountain-bike terrain: gravel roads, forest tracks and mule paths link the 194 hamlets along all 45 km of the valley, from about 600 metres on the valley floor up to the high pastures.

With no large tourist resorts, traffic is minimal and the routes are often deserted: you ride in silence, through chestnut and larch woods, with views opening up as you climb.

The main route

The Percorsi Occitani by MTB too

The valley's signature route, the Percorsi Occitani, is not reserved for walkers: it can be travelled on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike, and is waymarked in yellow with signposts.

Be aware, though, that some sections remain technically demanding and are not suited to every bike or every level. It is worth studying the individual stages on the official Percorsi Occitani website and adapting the route to your experience.

Respect

Etiquette on shared trails

In Valle Maira the trails are shared with walkers: common sense matters more than any sign.

  1. Always give way to people on foot, slowing down and making yourself heard.
  2. Keep your speed down near hamlets and high pastures.
  3. Never cut switchbacks: it wrecks the trail and starts erosion.
  4. Close any pasture gates you open along the way.
  5. Take your litter with you and respect the valley's silence.
E-bike

With or without a motor

The climbs in Valle Maira are serious: an e-bike is not essential, but it greatly widens your range, letting you reach high hamlets and pastures without specific training.

If you go for pedal assist, weigh up battery range against the ascent you have planned and check where you can recharge: services in the valley are spread out, not as dense as in a resort.

Where to start

A base for a cycling stay

The holiday homes and chalets of Vallemaira.House, at San Damiano Macra, are built for exactly this: hiking and mountain biking start straight from the door, with generous outdoor space for bikes and kit.

If you prefer to sleep high up, there is the albergo diffuso La Caso d'Elva at Elva, with an osteria and a wellness centre: welcome after a day in the saddle.
